This is a copy of the original 42 page book which was published in 1940; copied two pages onto one, 8-1/2" x 11" plain paper, stapled, no index.
At the beginning of its Sixth Year by Paul Schenk, farmer in Bernstadt 1886.... translated from the Swiss in 1939.
Mr. Schenk promoted the Swiss Colony Bernstadt, its wonders and its difficulties in the first six years of its settlement. Mentions the agricultural and technical advancements of the county. "Cheese making is a very considerable industry among our present Swiss people..."
Mentions the journey to Bernstadt, the selection of land, principal crops, industry and social life, map.
One great resource is the statistics of Colony Bernstadt, Proper, as of November 1883 listing the heads of families and former homes, ages of family members, acres and buildings and when settled, and a list of occupations and who they were. Wonderful information!!
