    Solid, Sharp!
Strong thick knives like this were common aboard ships of the
    Caribbean
and considered a necessity for survival at sea. They weren't usually issued from ship stores but bought by the sailors themselves and thus came in all shapes and sizes. A good sailing knife had a single edge and stiff spine that could be pounded on (batoned) with a wooden belaying pin to cut through a heavy tarred line. These were primarily utility knives for everyday carry but could be used effectively in combat for close quarters fighting, climbing over the crowded rail of a ship or in narrow companionways below decks. The size and blade shape of this design make it effective cutting, chopping, slashing and stabbing!

    Comments:
Nice design, good quality materials and solid construction at this price. I'm  a collector and a weekend warrior, active in local Re-enactment group and Renaissance Fairs, so I get lots of feedback. I sell what I own and can recommend! All photos are mine and I try to show you details that are overlooked in manufacturer’s stock photos, and that many sellers seem oblivious to. See my seller ratings and buy with confidence, plus I ship fast.

The 'Boucan' was one of the most common knives on
    sailing vessels in the Caribbean
    .
Modeled after and/or made from broken cutlasses, they were originally long bladed knives used on wild game when hunting. T
he knives would be used in cutting the animal apart and preparing the meat for smoking or barbecuing, what the native islanders called 'boucan'
Of course they also made handy
weapons as well as an essential tool for everyday carry aboard ship.
